Has the world given up on its goal to limit global temperature to 1.5 °C?

Why do I say that the world has given up on its goal to limit global temperature to 1.5 °C? It is evident from the data shown below. (Source: https://climate.copernicus.eu/climate-indicators). The year 2023 was the hottest year on record. The average global temperature was 1.5 °C above the pre-industrial level for 173 days in 2023. The 2015 Paris accord, binding to all the nations, stated that the overall goal should be to pursue efforts “to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.” However, scientists have warned us that we MUST limit global temperature to 1.5 °C by the end of this century. Otherwise, the climate consequences would be brutal to the planet and people. We will witness frequent and intense heat waves, thunderstorms, and droughts; glaciers will melt, and sea levels will rise.

Look at the following graphs: until now, about 8900 Gtons of glacier mass has disappeared from the planet, and the sea level rise is about 11 cm. Are we on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and do we have the window for meaningful change quickly? The answers to both questions are unequivocally NO. To limit global temperature to 1.5 °C, greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 and decline 43% by 2030. (https://unfccc.int/process-and-meetings/the-paris-agreement). As seen in the following graph, carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is steadily increasing without any sign of decline.

Do we not have any responsibility for the future generation? Do we wish to leave the planet in dire condition for our children? In this critical decade, we must take bold actions to keep 1.5 °C within reach.
